Push Button Toilet not working

apologies in advance for my lack of technical language in this post....

For a day or so the cistern of my push button toilet was taking ages to refil and there was an pretty much constant sound of the tank filling, then it stopped re-filling completely. Took the lid off and could get it to re-fill by jiggling the platic thingy on the left of the tank, but the water comes out in a dribble and it doesn't stop when it's full but seems to drip out into the bowl.

My DIY knowledge is about zero but I've had a look online and I think this may be a straight forward thing to fix but the instructions don't make much sense to me as I'm not sure what bits they are refering to. Can anyone point me in the direction of a very simple set of instructions/trouble shooting guide or should I just call in the pro's (plumber wanted £100)?

Thanks in advance

toilet flushes fine when it does fill up and water pressure elsewhere is fine. Had a play around last night and we've got it stop when the tank is full but it still dribbles when it comes time to refil. thanks.

More than likely you need a new fill valve fitting or probably just the bits inside it.

Its easy & cheap to do if you can isolate the supply going into the toilet. Is there an isolation valve in the pipe going to the toilet?

  • Ours is doing exactly the same thing. I picked up a new valve in Homebase for just over a tenner but haven't fitted it yet. It looks like a simple job though.

Just an update incase anyone else has a similar problem. Replaced the valve with the help of a You Tube vid. Toilet fixed and £90 saved. Thanks all!
