Outlook can be purchased as a a stand alone or part of MS Office (not Home and Student versions).

Try Thunderbird it's free, from the Firefox people.

I use Thunderbird too. I dislike windows live essentials, so refuse to install their mail program. I will be using MS Outlook when I get around to buying MS office 2010 professional (student license).

On my Win7 pc, Windows Live mail appears to bundled in with the Live Essentials package on the uninstall programs page, so you may have to uninstall the lot then reinstall any bit you might want to use such as Live Messenger, Movie Maker etc?
