Hi My friend has asked me to put this question on for him as he has no net access at the moment.
He says every time he starts his PC it does a disk check.
He doesn't know why this is or what triggers it and wants to stop it.
Any ideas?

What Version of Windows is he using, the main cause of this in older versions of windows is not shutting it down properly. Just as a safety precaution I would recommend he backs up all his data in case the disk is damaged0

Hi thanks alanclose, he is using Windows XP home edition with the SP2 upgrade I think it was called. He has used this for a long time (years) and cannot think of anything that is new that may cause this. He has tried restoring to several points but it does not remove this problem.0 -
A known issue with HPScanjet 5100C scanner.
Also if the System registry hive or the Software registry hive is damaged.

This was a problem a few years ago. This is what was happening
The last thing windows does is right a file that says "I closed down correctly" then it turns off the power.
Then along came HDs with caches. These store information in the memory before writing it to the HD.
Windows send the "i shut down corectly" Message to the HD, it goes into the HD memory and windows turns off the power before the HD has time to actually save it onto the HD.
Next time windows starts up that "I shut down correctly" message is not on the HD. Because it was the HD memory ready to be written to the Hd when the power went off. So it thinks it didn't shut down properly last time and does a disk scan.
This was a common problen with windows 95/98 but I've never heard of it with xp.
There is a registry entry that makes windows delay turning off the power, to give the HD time to write the message onto the disk, but I can't remember what it is.
PS. This post was writen in layman's language, to get the idea across to those who are less experienced.0 -

I suddenly developed this problem last week after years of running with no problem. I followed the instructions given and it's ok now.
