Reclaiming money paid into wrong account

Help please....

I am trying to reclaim money paid out of my bank account into an account held with Citibank. This happened because of 1 wrong digit on the sort code... the account it has been paid to does exist but I am having a great deal of trouble reclaiming the money.

My bank says it has tried to contact Citibank but had no response from them, I have now written to them as well.

Can anyone give me any advice?

Thank you....

Was it you who instructed the bank to make the payment or did the bank do it themselves?
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)
  • We instructed bank to pay, but the building society that it was going into gave us the incorrect sort code !
    Thanks
  • If you can prove that you might have a case against them - otherwise you have to hope and pray that the account owner is honest and decent and refunds.

You can also request your bank for funds to be transfrred back.

Erm ... I don't think this is correct?

they would only dispute the transaction and poss. require evidence
  • I agree, the receiving bank would have to be eually helpful for you to recover your money. You need to start from your own bank who would then take this matter further.

I would doubt citibank would reply as they are not obliged to.

Speak to your bank, explain them and they would then dispute this for you and should be able to recover it without any problem.
Sorry but this is completely wrong.
When using Internet banking to make payments it is your responsibility to make sure that the details that you input are correct - in fact there is usually a box that pops up asking if you are sure that you want to proceed. If you do so then it is down to you.

Your bank might help - in this case it looks like they have written to Citibank on OP's behalf - but they cannot force anyone to refund.
