The base is basically a box to support a mattress- so don't spend big bucks there.
The majority of your budget should go on the mattress. Don't be afraid to buy each in different places.

The Ikea Sultan mattresses are good value but obv are in European sizes.

Ikea Sultan range are cheap rather than good value IMO. Had one for a few years and it became lumpy and uncomfortable.
Having said that they do seem to offer a 90 day exchange policy and a 25 year warranty (wouldn't rely too much on that though)

We have a pocket sprung with about 7cm memory foam on top now and have had for about 3 years i think - got it from Dreams and definitely overpaid with hindsight but its comfortable and I am hoping will last a good few years

I was looking for a bed with maximum storage space &, after much research, bought one from the https://www.thestoragebed.co.uk . They delivered & assembled it for me. It offers much more storage space than a divan bed, & is an excellent 'Made in Britain' product. I'm very happy with mine.
