Photograph resoloutions to megapixel

Options
Hi all,

I am interested in finding out about photograph resoloutions compared to the "mega-pixel" rating.

Sorry that probably doesn't make sense.

I take pictures at 3mp on my camera which gives me a photo that is 2048 pixels x 1536 pixels.

I would like to know if all 3mp cameras take photos at this resoloution?

And what resoloution doe 4, 5, 6..... mp cameras take photos at?

Maybe someone could direct me to a website that has a table that has the sizes on?!?!

Cheers

M

    The number of megapixels is simply the number of horizontal pixels multiplied by the number of vertical pixels then divided by 1,000,000 (1 million, mega).
    So your 2048 x 1536 image is actually 3.1 megapixels.
    Other 3 megapixel cameras will have similar pixel size images, but can be slightly different as the sensor can actually be from around 2.9 to 3.1 megapixels for a 3 megapixel camera.

    A 2048 x 1536 photo is a 4:3 aspect ratio, this is the ratio of horizontal to vertical, and is standard on most digital cameras (and the same as non-widescreen TVs).

    2048/1536 = 4/3. Or the vertical size is 3/4 of the horizontal size.

    To calculate the horizontal and vertical number of pixels from the megapixel number (assuming 4:3 aspect ratio) :

    x = 1000 * sqrt (4M/3)
    y = 3x/4

    where M is megapixels, x is horizontal pixels, y is vertical pixels (sqrt is square root).

    so, rounded to nearest number of pixels :

    6 Megapixel is 2828 x 2121 pixels

    5 Megapixel is 2582 x 1937 pixels

    4 Megapixel is 2309 x 1732 pixels

    3 Megapixel is 2000 x 1500 pixels

    2 Megapixel is 1633 x 1225 pixels

    1 Megapixel is 1155 x 866 pixels

    Note that a 6 megapixel image does not have double the number of horizontal pixels of a 3 megapixel image.
