Hello
Everyone was so helpful with my self-levelling that Im hoping I will get similar rsponse for this problem.
I painted my very small bathroom with Permoglaze vinyl matt emulsion (purchased from Brewers after discussion with chap there). I painted over a kitchen and bathroom paint with no prep just a clean and now I have permanent steam/condensation stains on the walls. I only did one coat and now it looks DREADFUL -what did I do wrong and how do I put it right please!

"I have permanent steam/condensation stains on the walls"
What are these like? Is it damp patches?
If you have damp patches, you need to let it dry, use some damp proofer (Thompsons do a good one), and give the bathroom another coat (at least).
Even if it is not damp, the bathroom will probably need another coat anyway.0 -
Hi liam8282 - no it is definitely NOT damp its where the stem condensation from when I shower has collected, slightly run down then dried and stained, so it LOOKS a bit like damp but its as dry as a bone. Have got a wall mounted fan heater in there too so there is air circulation but its an old downstairs bathrr]oom extension on an old cottage, so all out side walls. Do you think another coat might solve it?debt free 2021 at current DMP rate (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0

The problem is the condensation not your painting. You need the room to be adequately ventilated either with a window or extractor fan or both. The fan heater is making the problem worse by adding additional heat to the air which on contact with cold walls causes even more condensation. Once you have the airflow sorted just use a normal vinyl silk emulsion on walls/ceilings. This will be easy to wipe clean and resist stains.0

If the walls are dry and it is just marking coming through, more coats would be the way to go if you want a good coverage.
The thompsons damp proofer I was talking about, also covers up really bad stains etc, stops them from coming through.

You should be able to get it at most DIY places.0 -
I also agree with DirectDebacle , the problem of the condensation will still be there, and it will no doubt happen again over time.
I am just talking about your current painting problem, one coat is probably not enough, so you will need an extra coat, maybe more. If the stains are bad, Thompsons is a good buy.0 -
I think the ventilation is good as I rarely close the bathroom door fully even when in shower as dogs get separation angst (sad) - my question really relates to the suitability of the Permoglaze vinyl matt emulsion - was this a suitable paint to begin with or should I have gone for something else. I still have 3/4 of the paint left and would dearly like to NOT have to spend out on more due to finances being awful for forseeable future. I hope this doesn't sound lame - but with the arthritis I also don't want to put another coat on to have same problem - would rather spend out on more paint to minimise number of times i need to ppaint as it takes 2-3 days for my shoulders to become liveable with after a session with a paintbrush.debt free 2021 at current DMP rate (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0
