Where is the immobiliser on vw polo?

We had to send the ECU away again for repair for our 2001 VW Polo saloon diesel 1.9s tdi. They have reprogrammed it and it has arrived back today. They have told us that the immobiliser on our car ( must be a factory fitted one) is corrupting the ECU each time. They told us to disable it so the ECU will continue to work.
My dh friend is going to do it, but is not familiar with where the immobiliser is.
If anyone can help, please I would appreciate it. I have tried to google it, but just get page upon page of vw polos for sale!!!!!!
BTW, I have asked on the very helpful VW forum for help, but it doesn't get as much traffic as on here, and we really need to do this today if possible.

Depends if the immobiliser was fitted by VW at the factory, or retro-fitted.

The factory fit option is nigh-on impossible to just remove. It is wired into the convenience control unit, fuel supply, ignition system & a few other anciliaries. You will need to get it fixed before fitting the new ECU if you are happy with their remote diagnosis? If it's factory fit though, there should be a handful of wires that can be disconnected from various points, and should be a black box behind the dash linked to the ignition barrell.

I think it is factory-fitted. The guy we bought it from had it from new, and never mentioned an immobiliser when he sold it. I think he would have, if he had spent money on doing it.

They are trying to get the car working now with the fixed ecu. The engine management lights won't even come on and the car won't start. It was working perfectly and was drivable before we sent the ecu back for reprogramming. It just had a warning light that wouldn't go off and a mechanic said it was the ecu and would need to be repaired again.
Now the car is just dead.
