Planting trees (how close to drain)??
Hi, we want to plant some Leylandii trees right the way along one side of our garden, but there is a sewage drain between our house and where we want to plant the trees, so we just wondered how close is too close? ie will the tree roots damage the drain? if so is there anyway we can stop this?
Many thanks..

I have read about them spreading more than 10ft so 4mtrs would be a safe bet.
Google it.

I think it depends upon the weather. In a dry year the roots will keep growing and growing if they smell water. I hope you don't live next-door to me.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Also depends on what the drain is made of..........& its condition.0

I bet people are falling over themselves to live next door to you.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Leylandii Roots are usually confined to the top 2 ft of soil, so depends how far down sewer drain is. Also need to be aware that it is extremely difficult to get any other plants or even lawn to grow near leylandii as they tend to draw all the moisture in the soil for themselves.
If you live in an exposed area be prepared for them blowing over in a gale when they get bigger, a friend of mine lost most of his leylandii hedge in a gale a couple of years ago as they quite shallow rooted in relation to height.0 -
This is scary. I have huge lelandii (trees) along one edge of my garden. Err, hope they dont blow over & neighbour is fine - likes the privacy apparantly0
