Haha I'm envisioning another one of those annoying Halifax adverts where they are in a fake radio station. This time they're rapping. ISA rapping.

Anyway..... Have you already got a stocks and shares ISA?

Do you want to make a one-off lump sum purchase of share (how much in £s? Over £1000?), or do you want to make monthly purchases to slowly build up your holding?
  • was thinking of buying £3000 worth, wish i had ought some ages ago, keep watching the price go up!

I have an account with TD Waterhouse in order to buy individual shares:
    http://www.tdwaterhouse.co.uk/

Each trade is £12.50 buy or sell (=£25 "round trip"). Other places are cheaper. I use TD because they allow me to trade on overseas markets and they let me hold foreign currency in the account. Also they have always been very helpful and never messed me about.

If you don't need the access to foreign markets, then TD's prices can be beaten by other institutions. Hopefully someone who uses them will be able to recommend them to you.

I have an ISA with Interactive Investor (also called iii around here, and can be found at www.iii.co.uk). The ISAs section gives you a guide to how it works.

£10 to buy or sell, or if you set it up the purchase in advance, there are about 4 days per month that it will cost £1.50 to buy.

I am very happy with the service, although I'm not a user with complex requirements (just buy FTSE listed shares online). They also have a portfolio summary which I use to keep track of purchases without logging into my account, and also potential buys.

EDITED TO REMOVE RECOMMENDATION FOR III - THEIR SERVICE HAS GONE DOWNHILL AFTER A CHANGE IN OWNERSHIP. THE PORTFOLIO BUILDER FOR £1.50 HAS NOW BEEN REDUCED TO ONCE PER MONTH, AND ACTUALLY IS NOT WORKING AT ALL AT PRESENT.
I've got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.
