Gas meters - help!!

Options
Hi,

I have just moved into a flat, it has the pre-pay gas and electric meters in. The electric seems to be fine but the gas is costing a fortune and only been in the flat 6days! So far I have had to put on £20 gas and only £8 electric! The gas is through British Gas and the electric is through EDF Energy. A few people have told me to get the meters taken out and get put on a monthly budget plan but is this cheaper than having a meter? I dont want to end up with a large bill! I'm not exactly sure what type of boiler it is but the pilot light is under the gas fire and the dial on the wall controls the water and central heating. I have set the timer on the gas at approx 6.00am - 8.00am and then 4pm - 10pm, the gas is on level 2 but it doesnt seem to keep the flat warm and the water doesnt seem to stay hot for very long!

I was considering asking the landlord to install a combi-boiler but i'm not sure if this is something the landlord would do for the tenants!

I have also been told that its more cost efficient if i dont use the gas central heating and use electric heaters, is that right?!

Any advice would be much apprecitated :) xx

£20 gas for a week where you have the heating on 8 hours a day is not expensive. To cut the bills down, use less, wear more clothes etc...
Gas heating tends to be much much cheaper than electric.

The most important question is - have you contacted the suppliers and got your own payment device, if not do so asap because you are creditted the account of the previous tenant not yours.

Have you checked the gas meter has no debt recovery set on it?

Note it may take 2 or 3 top ups before any existing debt on the meter is removed.
Don't worry, you account will be credited if this happens.
