Get ready for digital

Hi everyone. I like to pop things on here when I hear about them or see them.

My gran has had to catch up with the digital age (she did put up a fight though) and get her TV all sorted to stop getting bog standard terrestrial signal but she had a problem in her area and had to get a booster.

Anyway, the guy who told her this said he could fit it for £200!!!!! I nearly threw him off the roof myself so I went in search for a cheaper quote and found this site;

http://www.aerialquotes.co.uk/

aerialquotes.co.uk
(have put it in twice as not sure if I can post URL's yet)

you basically put in what you need doing, and your postcode and bingo, we had 3 companies ring us up trying to beat each other's prices. It was quite funny. In the end, we got it all sorted fo £75. It took the guy just over an hour to fit the booster so all in all very happy.

It's not a scam, I used them myself!

  • You can get plug-in boosters for a few pounds.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • That is very true, but we had to have an aerial fitted so it was a little more complicated that plugging something in. I wish it were that simple though.

I just thought people might like this site, even if they just try it out to see what the cost would be. It's free to use and is really simple, in fact my gran filled it in herself (under my guidance though)

    So what?

It would seem the OP gran was probably in need of an aerial and cable upgrade plus a masthead amplifier as her property is in a poor signal area.

HG aerial around £25.00 plus cable and a masthead amplifier around £10.00.

To get that supplied and fitted for £75.00 is a result if it has been done properly.

I know as I have had to fit this arrangement to receive Freeview.

The cheapo boosters you mention are only useful if the signal is reasonable in the first place, otherwise they just magnify the interference from a poor signal.

Why does the site talk about tree removing services when you click on "about us"?

If I really needed an aerial fitting, I would just look in the yellow pages and ring round a few to get the average price. (or if you can diy, like I recently have done)
  • Not sure I see the tree removing stuff on there. just looked at it again. I agree though, ringing around in the old fashioned way is good but this one did it all for me. One form and I had 3 quotes within 2 hours. No cost on my phone bill, no waste of my time trying to find the local company and when they guy came he said that more people are using these sorts of sites now as we're getting lazier. It makes sense though I guess and my gran doesn't actually have a yellow pages anymore!

I am not knocking the site, and if it worked for you great, but personally I wouldn't use them.

The only contact details you have are that site, you could get any old cowboy turning up doing some dodgy work, only to disappear off into the sunset with your cash.
  • fair point. I think they are part of a bigger set of sites, I've seen stuff like this before. getaquote and peoplesearch (or something similar) are sites that provide this. You can't ring them direct either.

I think its just a time saver and companies that get the enquiry have to PAY for it before they get your details. That's what our installer told me. I don't think cowboys are likely to pay for stuff like this if they have no guarantee of the work.

All good to throw into the pot I suppose.

I've not used Yell for years to be honest. I just don't have the time (or energy) to be trawling through vast list of the same types of people

Agreed, no contact details whatsoever, and people are putting their details in to this site?

    They must be mad.

Reminds me of a system that was around some years ago in Naval port areas (probably same for army/RAF). When you moved house you had to get three quotes and take the cheapest. A lot of the removal companies would offer to get you two more quotes which would be "more expensive than us".
They did; but of course the whole thing was a price fixing cartel with all the local removers involved with everyone charging way over the going rate.
