XP PC hanging on startup - help!

When I switched on my desktop PC, it hung on startup at the black screen with the XP logo - with the worm going left to right.
With no HDD activity and no progress, I pressed the reset button and used 'startup in the safe mode', it hung again.
Pressed reset and selected 'use last known good config', it hung again. The PC is off at the moment.
I haven't a clue what to do next and why this has happened. Can anyone advise please?
Thank you in advance.
