Home insurance help please

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a little advice/help with something.

Long story short, the external hard drive i used to back up all my stuff has broken, the problem is an electrics problem so all the data is still there, they hard drive just isnt powering up.

I have contacted seagate ( the makers) about the problem and they said that the data is deffinately recoverable but it will cost

£400 - £700

Now I dont have that kind of money spare and i really dont want to lose wedding/children photos.

The help i require is....

Can I claim this on Home contents insurance under accidental damage?

Like i say the data is still there, it just costs £400+ to get at it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Unless the cause of the electrical problem was accidental damage, no.

As this was a back up copy, surely you have the originals on another machine somewhere?

By the way, claiming will cost you far far more in the long run than the value of the drive.

if you do claim and they replace the drive, as a replacement must be cheaper than the 400-600 repair. The original will be their property & will be wiped before destruction.

You can't claim the cost on your home insurance.

Before giving up on getting the data back find some good local computer repair people and talk to them - Seagate's charges will be the highest end of the market and there will probably by an independent person there who can help.

    I agree.

They will replace your Hard drive with the new one as its not very expensive now adays. They wont pay the cost for data recovery.

You will still lose your data.

You should always maintain a backup or even upload the important photos on sites like picasa and others for free.

If you take the drive to a PC repair type shop who are capable of testing the internal connections, they may be able to fix or atleast power up the drive to allow for the data to be transfered.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • Thank you guys for all your help.

I am going to give claiming a miss and try to source a PC Repair body who is able to retrieve my data for me, hopefully for less than the £400+ quoted.
