Boiler cost when on idle
hi all.
just a query really.
just wanted to know what a baxi 552 back boiler would cost when left on idle, so just pilot light is on.
i knew i would be out all day so just took a photo before and after when home to see what difference was.
also when looking at it there is a little clock with 0.5 near it, am i right to assume that when thats gone round twice, the last digit should change from 1-2-3....
taken 10.56 this morning
and this one taken 21.20
i know im probably being a bit anal here, but if it uses a lot of gas and there are savings to be made i might just switch off the gas to the boiler like in summer and turn it back on in winter
one final question when i give a meter reading to npower would the above reading be 2554 or 25541

I don't think that is a clock but a pressure gauge0

The last digit(red 1) is 0.1 of an Imperial gas unit - so is 10 cubic feet or approx 3.2kWh costing appropx 10p.
Your reading would be 2554 for meter reading puposes - you ignore the red digit.
If you search for pilot light consumption on here you will find two or three threads. For many people it costs between £50 and £80 a year. However bear in mind that for much of the year that heat is not wasted. However some people do switch off their boilers over summer and rely on electric showers. It is not cheaper to use an immersion.0 -
dunno on the clock it does move when anythign gas related is running.
so 50 - 80 for a pilot light does seem expensive, and i dont really heat much water with the boiler as we shower with electric shower.
so maybe water heated once every few days in summer0 -
did'nt know pilot light cost so much, we got a baxi & hubbys says we don't have pilot light on it, but got pilot light on fire, don't know how much that is costing, never thought about it before0

Back boilers are horribly inefficient, made worse by the fact that you have to have a large vent in the wall for combustion ventilation and lots of room heat disappears up the flue.
There may be grants available to help with the cost of replacing it.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

I would have it back in the blink of an eye.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I have 2 pilot lights, the hot water one uses about 3 kWh a day, 10p a day or £35.60 a year and the heating one about 5 kWh a day which is on from Oct to May, 7 months of the year, so costs about £32 a year, so I am paying nearly £70 a year on pilot lights.
One of the reasons for replacing my warm air heating with a combi boiler and radiators when my warm air heating becomes uneconomic to maintain. It is 20 years old now.0
