Returning a shower screen 18 months+ after purchase (B&Q)

Options
Hello all,

We have just had our ensuite refitted after being without for 18 months+. We had been buying bits and pieces over that time, all the while saving for the work to be done.

Tonight I used the shower for the first time and the enclosure does not seem fit for purpose. It's meant to be a walk in enclosure, model type SQ05 from B&Q (they no longer stock this).

Basically there is a curve of glass across half the width of the tray and a flat piece of glass across the depth of the tray. When the shower is on, the water is flying out of the gap which you walk into.

I no longer have the receipt, but I do have the delivery note and a customer reference. I bought almost everything for the ensuite from B&Q and have receipts for most things. In total we've spent almost £1000 at B&Q.

The tray and screen (from memory) were between £250 and £300. They came as a unit despite being seperate items.

The tray and screen were purchased in July 2009. Do I stand any chance of returning these items as they're a complete waste of space, time and money. I'll also have to buy a new screen (and possibly tray) as fell as forking out for removal and refitting again.

Please can you advise? Thanks in advance.

Edit - I would go to store but they shut in 20 minutes and I would prefer advice before doing so. Thanks.

    No chance............
  • You have nothing to lose by asking. If you are ultra polite, reasonable and emphatically not aggressive, you may get some resolution, even if it's only a £25 credit note.

What you don't yet know is if the store has had many complaints about this very thing in which case, they might be willing to meet you partway.

Are you sure its the shower screen and not the way it has been installed?
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • Maybe the reason they no longer sell it is because it was a poor design and others complained. As already said, asking very politely may help.
Personally I would say that £300 for a tray and screen that size is very cheap, maybe if budget allows you to spend a bit more you could get something better quality.

Worth asking. I have 5 B & Qs near me, if one won't return something I go to another or i just wait until somebody else is on the customer service desk. It will be easier getting a credit note than a full refund

It sounds like your shower has been installed incorrectly. By that I mean it sounds like you have fitted it in the wrong place within the enclosure so the jet is aiming towards gap. I have seen these screens before, both instore and in peoples homes and i've seen a few complaints too (on this exact model and on similar models) and in every single one of the complaints the shower hasn't been fitted in a logical place.

When buying a shower cubicle with an open area instead of a door it is common sense that if you point the shower at the open area the water will come out. Surely you noticed this when you first chose the shower cubicle 18 months ago?

If I were you i'd head up to your bathroom, look at the cubicle and the shower inside it and look at how/why the water is coming straight out. Now look at it and imagine the shower is positioned a little bit to one side of the other. Does it now look like the water would stay in the enclosure? If it does then get your plumber back and tell him that he has installed it incorrectly. If you cant think of anywhere at all in the enclosure where water would stay in then you might have an argument.

As for it being 18 months old. You'll be VERY lucky to get anything back now.
