Want to book a trip to old trafford to see a game as a Christmas present for my son. Does anyone know the most cost effective way of doing it?
Thanks

If you are not already a member of the MUFC ticket scheme then you will have to buy a package from a ticket agancy. But they don't come cheap

Tickets for MUFC members are usually only available through a ballot (very heavily over subscribed ) and even then you normally have to apply 6 weeks before the game. We have only managed one game this season through this route0 -
Obviously pre-Xmas, but United vs. Benfica in the Champions League (6th Dec, 7:45pm) is now on general sale, which I don't think you need to be a member for.

Do the decent thing and take him to see the real "Champions of Europe" instead.
Leeds United vs Hull City - December 23rd.
He'll thank you for it in years to come.0 -
I suspect you are not local to Manchester (like most of their 'fans') so why not take him to see the nearest decent team and get him to forge a bond with them that he will be able to pursue on a regular basis as he grows up?
Old Trafford is little more than a football theme park now, with hordes of unsuspecting saps bled dry every week with third rate canteen slop as part of the overpriced packages designed for the football tourist. Don't forget, of course, the obligatory trip to the shop to get fleeced out of another wad of cash for trashy memorabilia.
Do the decent thing and go to a football match!0 -
Surprise surprise, someone asks for a bit of help and we get the usual anti-United vitriol. Shame - because you actually had a decent point about going to see a small local team.
United are actually mid-table in terms of ticket prices. They start at £23 for non members and £18 for members.
And of course, you aren't forced to buy the food, the drink or indeed visit the club shop. There is such a thing as free will.
What it comes down to is entertainment. I'm not going to sit here and say United are the best team in the world (at least not at the moment) but they play some great football. Similarly I can't stand Arsenal, but I'm sure a trip to the Emirates Stadium would be a great afternoon of entertainment.
My last United Match? 3-2 against Celtic. I'll remember that one forever.
I'm from Manchester by the way, although I now live in London.0 -

The ticket prices are irrelevant for the casual football 'tourist' who just wants to give little Johnny his first day out at Old Trafford. The only easy way to do it will be the hospitality package at about a hundred quid a go. That way you get the museum tour and the canteen dinner. It is difficult to get the basic price tickets otherwise.
It's actually nothing to do with being anti-United. It is a far wider thing, about the way football clubs in general, and the Premiership in particular, are wringing every last pound out of the fans in every way possible in order to pay the ridiculous salaries of their pampered prima donnas. I know Chelsea are just as bad, as no doubt are several others.
I feel very strongly that football, having been the working man's game, is becoming restricted to people with fat wallets only, and that in the long term that can only be bad for the game.
By all means discuss.:whistle:0 -
As I said in my original post, tickets for United vs. Benfica are on general sale, and anyone can pick up the phone and buy them. This is often the case for midweek games, particular in the cup competitions.
You're absolutely right about the rest of it though. You want to take a look at ticket prices in Europe - they are a fraction of the cost.
Going back to the original point, it's also worth considering fan boards and even eBay / Loot. You can pick up face value tickets that way as well.0 -

How I agree about European prices. I have watched games in several countries, including France, Spain and Portugal. Invariably the tickets are much cheaper than here. I have had an excellent seat at a Portuguese Premio Liga game for as little as 10 euros, although Benfica is a bit more. La Liga in Spain can be less than 20 euros, depending on opposition.
The most amazing was probably Malta, where I stumbled across an international tournament. I saw 2 games, both full internationals, for £M3. MrsS was admitted for 50cents simply for being female.
The golden eggs are likely to run out as the goose is finally strangled in this country.0 -
