Unable to hear video from Mobile on Laptop - ANY IDEAS?

Dear Somebody,
Got a Compaq Windows 7 laptop and recently had a new Samsung Tocco Lite Mobile.
When I take video on the phone and transfer it to the laptop, I am able to see the video but there is no sound! The video is perfectly fine when viewed via the mobile phone. This is exactly the same on my Husbands Samsung phone.
However, when I transfer video footage from our Samsung Digital Camera this is fine and I can hear and see the video footage and works perfectly fine!
I have had a look on the internet and it seems that Windows 7 and some mobile phones clash. I also receive a message when clicking on some video files that " The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. "
What does all this mean and will I ever be able to view videos from my mobile phone via the PC? I was beginning to think that my laptop was on the way out (only had it 9 months)!
