i cant believe its used out of date butter!!

i bought a packet of `i cant believe its not butter` today from my local total garage, when i got it home the foil had clearly been peeled back, it had clear knife marks in it and also some sort of crumbs (clearly used!)
when i returned it, the shop assistant asked if i had taken it from the back of the fridge as it may have been one of his staff members ( took it from middle but thats not the point) he offered a replacement which i refused and reluctantly gave me a refund.
As i went to drive away the assistant waved me back into the shop and pointed out that the butter was out of date suggesting that i had returned him an old butter, i am utterly disgusted by this claim and would be interested to know who i contact to make a complaint as im pretty sure they should not be storing staff things in with shop goods, or if the problem is them not rotating stock then im wondering what else could be lurking in the back of those chillers.
its not the fact of its just a pack of butter, its the accusation that im trying to rip him off of a pound pack of butter in front of other customers thats annoyed me. any advice would be much appreciated thank you

Trading Standards deal with out of date food.
Unsafe food will possibly fall under Environmental Health.
I would go with TS initally though.0 -
Nah, it seems to be the butter the staff use for their toast and sandwiches. I've worked in a garage and we had our own milk and butter but kept in the main refridgerated area.
So if you wish to proceed with your complaint against the staff member, I'd personally write a letter to the garage manager with a copy going to head office. (with CC Head Office written at the bottom so that they know it's gone there!)One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0 -
i appreciate that it may very well be a staff product which if this is something that they do.... it makes it worse!. as i said its not about the butter necessarily its about the accusation that i was trying to rip him off for a pound..... i know times are hard right now for everyone but things havent got that bad in my household. ive put a complaint into total h/o and if they choose not to reply i will contact t/s0

What you are a victim of here is bad customer service. And that has nothing to do with trading standards. You took it back and got your refund. Trading standards will not take ANY action at all, so that is a waste of your time. Stick with head office. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

Its a question of whether they regularly sell out of date products or whether this was a 'staff use' butter that they had left in the fridge. If its not a regular issue TS prob wont care.
On the other hand if they are making it possible for people to buy used goods they may be falling foul of some other law. if they are stashing stuff in the fridge then they should mark it up clearly as not for sale.0 -
How dairy accuse you of returning out of date goods.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Why worry about it? You got your refund. Not great service admittedly but what would you like to happen? Compensation for hurt pride? It's all a bit of a tizz for the sake of a pot of marg. Just don't shop there again and tell as many people as you can how rubbish they are."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I would imagine the OP takes offence to being called a liar and thief. As well as their commitment to protecting others from the same fate. I applaud them for thinking of others, rather than taking the selfish attitude championed by some. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Are they part of a group, or are they an independent petrol station? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
