Sat Nav blowing fuse.

Hello, whenever I plug my Garmin Nuvi200 sat nav into the cigarette lighter socket for recharging it seems to blow the fuse, and of course doesnt work. Any ideas why...I did use this sat nav in a hire car in Florida, would that cause it?

Which fuse is it blowing, the one in the car or in the sat nav plug ?
  • When you brought the satnav back from Florida, did you inspect the power lead before using it here?

If the lead was damaged (maybe crushed in a suitcase), this could cause the fuse to blow.
Apart from that, there isn't way way that simply using it in the USA could have caused any problems.

I assume that the fuse is in the accessory plug.

    1) Try the kit in another vehicle/accessory socket - could be a connector issue

    2) Try just the power lead on its own - it could be a dubious connector or shorted lead.

If the fuse blows - have someone check/repair the lead. In general the connectors at the unit end are rather poor.

If the fuse does not blow:

    3) Try your device with another lead.

If the fuse blows - then it possibly indicates that there is a short circuit in the device (a protection diode could have shorted or the voltage regulator may have failed).

NOTE - USE THE CORRECT RATING OF FUSE.

I have seen accessory leads that have melted which resulted damaging upholstery.

My guess is that part of the plug got stuck in the cig lighter and blowing the fuse.

i have had this happen in my work van not with sat nav but another plug,i assume it is the car fuse blowing?

have you checked another item in the fag lighter to make sure the socket in car is good?

if the fag lighter socket tests ok and looks ok inside then have a good look at the sat nav lead and maybe purchase a new one as it probably got damaged on way home from florida

Cheers people, yes its the in-car fuse which blows. Today im going to replace the fuse and then try my phone charger and see if it works.

If it does well then it must be the sat nav or its lead?
