Paying for a user car from a dealer

We are buying a car from a show room and paying over £10000. We have paid a deposit by CC but now need to pay the rest - by a bank transfer to their account. They won't take a credit card. It does worry me that something happens between sending the money and picking up the car. Am I being silly? Is there any alternative?

  • i would arrange to do transfer at your bank branch with the dealer there, and get keys when completed.

What gives you reason to be suspicious of the dealer?

You have a signed order from the dealership, I suppose?

Surely they will take a Debit Card payment?

They should - I've bought a car from a dealer before that said their machine had authorised a £40k debit card payment without further authorisation :eek::eek:
  • I'm surprised the dealer won't take a debit card payment at point of sale.

It's how I've paid the five-figure balance for my last two new cars.

The days of bank drafts being as good as cash appear to be over because of forgeries, and the realisation payment can be stopped in certain circumstances.
  • I have no reason to be suspicious of the dealer - they are a big company. However if they have the money and the car and something happens to the company - don't I have a problem. I do not intend to go around with all that in cash. I think they wanted to charge if we used a debit card. A bank transfer for that amount can take up to 3 days but might not - so they could have the money for a couple of days and the car.

Extrtemeley unlikely, In fact, I don't think I have ever heard of a franchised dealer charging for a debit card transaction. It hardly costs them anything at all.

However, seeing as you paid for the deposit by credit card, you are protected by section 75 of the consumer credit act.

Thanks for the replies. Protected for the whole amount, as we paid deposit on Credit Card?
