Broken ipod

My son's ipod has broken, ie. the top panel where the lock switch is is coming away just under the switch. It will not turn on, no light, nothing - completely dead. It was in a protective case, but getting to the bottom of what happened is tough with a near teen - of course it may be just wear and tear.
Has anyone had experience of this and did you have any luck with getting it repaired? Any idea how much this would cost?
Any advice very much appreciated. Thanks.
