DIY lamps

Hey guys, been looking at nice simple floor standing lighting for my living room. I like the simple tall, tube/square paper lamps.
they are cheap enough but there always seems to be something i dont like ie colour of the stand. As i want to make as many things myself for my new place i thought i could make my own paper lamp.
problem is i dont know where to start. where do i go about getting the materials, mainly a suitable light fixing and materials.
been looking through google, anyone know of any good guides?

Any diy shop will sell different styles of bulb holders. Something like this will just need screwing down to your base :

You can then buy a switch - again, several types available at DIY shops. A bit of suitable flex, a plug, and Bob's your Auntie's live-in-lover.
Sorry, can't help with the shade material, sounds like that's your specialist subject :-) But a basic bulb-holder and switch is a doddle to put together.0
