Cashing Dollar Cheque

Is it possible to cash a USA dollar cheque in a UK account if the account is in another name to that of the cheque?

It's just my other half, who is here on a tourist visa currently, thus has no access to a bank account yet, has received a cheque and wishes for me to cash it.

As I understand it, American cheques are not account payee like ours, would it be therefore possible for her to countersign it, produce ID and authorise for the cheque to be paid into my account?

  • Easiest way to find out is to present it at a branch of your bank.

If they don't like it then you could open a joint account. As long as she can prove who she is (passport + some other ID) then this should be straightforward.

Do check the charges and processing times. It can be expensive and it can take a long time for you to get your hands on the money. Might be cheaper and quicker to post the cheque back to the US if she still has an account there.
