Landlords own meters

Options
I have a friend who has moved into a rented property. The landlord has stated that she can only buy electricity cards from him and she will use about £30 to £40 a week to heat and cook, it's a 3 room flat! Can the landlord do this and how can she check she is not being ripped off??

The LL can not make a profit from reselling the fuel. By law you are entitled to see what they are paying. Bear in mind that they will be paying VAT at a higher rate and they can not pass this on to you they need to reclaim it via their VAT return.

You need to ask the LL how much per kwh they are charging so people can give you a view if this is excessive or not.

My only thought would be if the cards are genuine.

Not saying you have dodgy landlord but you don't say who's meter it is.

The clue is in the title ;)

The scam applies to suppliers meters. It is unlikely to apply to a landlord's meter as they will probably use different cards.

  • Check the property to see if there is more than one meter, if there is then you know the LL is ripping you off. Then find out who the supplier is and ask them to bill you direct.
