hsbc missing funds

hi everyone. This is our first post so bear with us.We have just found out that a cash deposit of £700.00 to our current account was never credited to our account. It came to light whilst doing our year end accounts, nine months after the deposit was made.My query is,if we hadn't noticed would the bank ever own up to the error. We have raised the matter with the branch. They sorted the problem by returning the money to our account, fine. They then told us to work out what we thought they owed us, and they would consider our request. Is this how it should work or are they trying to pull a fast one.Can anybody advise us as to what to to,we feel that they have in effect stolen our money without permission
many thanks

  • They have to ask you and check their cash error records for that time
  • hi
they did all the checks after a time but have i got grounds to take it further
  • The bank probably didn't know about the error until you brought it to their attention,it may have gone in to the wrong account or the cashier may have had a till error that day. If they had known that there was an error and the money belonged to you they would have sorted it straight away.

This is normal, they're asking for your estimate of how much you were left out of pocket as a result of their error, ie how much you spent in phone calls, petrol driving to the branch, cost of your time, etc. Unless you work it out they won't know how much compensation is due.
