Cancellation Fees

Hi I am insured with Barclays insurance and pay monthly by direct debit.
However on saturday my car (somewhat old) broke down and can't be repaired. I unfortunately will have to scrap it.
Anyway rang to cancel my policy and was told that I have to pay £234 in order to do so and that they will come into my bank on 3rd of March to get it.
I have cancelled car insurance before and never had such fees.
Does anyone know if an option exists to freeze the policy until I get a car sorted or is there anything I can do about this charge.
Installements were normally taken by DD which was fine, but it seems now they can just go in and take what they want there and then.
I know it only looks like £200 to some but now being carless etc its a lot for me.
