I'm sorry I think I miss-phrased my first post! I had no intention of pushing my son one way or another! My eldest is already at Uni and this one was always going to make his decision based on what he wants not my financial position! I just like to be prepared in advance of any changes in my situation! A shortfall of £60 pounds a week on a large salary probably would make no difference but for me it does and I need to know in advance so that I can prepare and readjust my budget! I apologise for upsetting so many people with what I thought was a quite innocent question! I think behind my mistake was the concern that his school is offering him this "apprenticeship" as a way of keeping him at the school where he all but runs the media dept!

He could do the apprentice and then do a degree at the same time through open university with full funding for free.
Why don't you have anpther baby to replace him.

Jowo my mother was the same, at 16 I was told to leave school after the exams and get a job, and she would expect x amount for housekeeping.

I had no choice in this.

Where as DS has just turned 16, he wants to be a pilot, looked up what he needs to do etc..

I made it very clear it was his future and his decisions that count. (his father is not so happy as he has to continue with csa) his father wanted to stop paying the minute ds turned 16, i said that if ds wants college, uni etc then he could have another few years to go.

He likes the idea of the apprenticeship which will be working within his schools media department ....

An apprenticeship for helping to run a school media department?

Surely the only thing he needs is a bag of Doritos' and a TV remote?

He really needs to bear in mind the increased fee costs he'll incur by delaying university entry if he's able to go to university in 2011. Taking a chance on this "apprenticeship" could be an expensive decision.

Also, what is this apprenticeship in - how will he be trained, what will he be trained for and what qualifications will he get? It all sounds a bit dodgy to me.

An exaggeration, but I share your concern.

That's part of my concern - they haven't done apprenticeships before and this one appears to have been manufactured out of thin air! The school knew that I had reservations about ds going to Uni as although he is brilliant behind a camera and with computers he hates the academic side of it all. This apprenticeship is only for a year and will only be a grade 3 which is equivalent to 2 A level passes (he will already have 3). Although the school does A levels in Media & Film the staff are not very good with the hardware & software that's where my ds comes in! Sorry I'm going off subject!

It doesn't sound like a 'proper' apprenticeship. I'd look more into it.

I agree that it doesn't sound in any way like a proper apprenticeship, particularly as he's only going to get a qualification at the same level that he has already.

Where will he be doing this level 3 course and , if you don't mind my asking, where is your nearest university?
