Thermostat Help

Options
Hi,

My Parents are currently having a problem with there Honeywell Thermostat. They use to be able to have the thermostat between 10 - 15. During the Winter it stopped clicking on and they have just had a new one fillted. This will now not click on till above 20 degress which mean it gets to hot and when they turn it down it will not just call the raditors down and hold the heat. They just go stone cold. I have spoken to the company and the houseing company my Parents rent off and all they keep saying is that it working correctly.
But how can this be if the temp in the flat drops but the heating will not come on until you have put the thermostat over 20 degress.

If anyone know where I can get some free advice on this please help.

Thank
Sarah

Sounds as if the replacement thermostat is faulty, where is it located?
Are you sure that the boiler is not cutting out and not responding to the thermostat.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Hi,

They have said they will have a look at the boiler when they come out as I have got the houseing people coming with the heating company now. The Thermostat is in the front room which may be part of the problem as it's a small room and holds the heat, but no help to them when the bedroom which is by the front door is freezing. Going to buy some small thermoters for each room so we can recored the heat.

It could be a faulty thermostat but...

Mechanical thermostats are not particularly accurate (as opposed to precise)
i.e. just because the dial say 20 degress does not necessarily mean it is 20 degrees.

If you turn the dial round from low to high you should hear it click on. Turn it back down and it should soon click off. Don't take too much notice of the actual numbers, just get used to the ones you find a comfortable setting.
Without any heating, the click will be heard at the temperature of the room.

Most heating systems are quite primative. They don't adjust the temperature of the radiator to the deired room temperature; it simply turns the radiators on or off. It is this cycling that effectively keeps the room temperature at the desired temperature.

Therefore the housing company may be correct in that it is operating correctly. But if you have any ongoing issues, call them out again. They should provide you with instructions on how to operate your heating correctly.

The room thermostat controls the temperature in the room it is in.

If this is causing difficulties with the rest of the house, then turn down (or off) the radiator in the front room so that it is not so warm.

Alternatively, open the internal doors to all rooms and then the whole house should be the same temperature :)

The issue I would look at is whether there is a neutral in the wiring to the thermostat - and whether this has been connected. Mechanical thermostats usually have an 'anticipator heater', which comes on when the thermostat is calling for heat and goes off when heat is not required. This has the effect of narrowing the temperature range between the switch off when hot and switch on when cold temperatures.

  • Hi,
In my parents they can not switch the radiators up or down as they do not have a system that allows them to do that. Got to talk to the housing company again today and they said they may be able to fit a control on the radiator in there bed room. We have been told when the temp drops in the front room to the thermostat setting it should click on. My parents are away for a couple of days so I have left thermostat on 15 degrees and as I have now brought room thermometers waiting to see if the heating clicks in when the room temp drops.
If not it will be another phone call in the morning. Anyway thats for your comments and help so far.

    ...
I've not seen a water filled radiator system that doesn't have such valve fitted.

Usually one end of the radiator has a valve that can be turned by hand to turn off the radiator (where no TRV is fitted), and the other a valve that is capped. Take the cap off and that can also isolate the radiator.

The two valves are needed so that a radiator can be removed if necessary without draining down the entire system.
