So do you have a drive caddy? If not then there are some linux based recovery tools (either google or wait for recommendations). The only snag being your disk will almost certainly be NTFS and older linux stuff doesn't like that.0

No, was just checking as you didn't seem sure.
USB drive caddy enables you to connect the drive to another computer by USB where it will just appear as an external drive. That way you can check if the drive is working or not, and copy your data if it is.
You will need a laptop caddy (2.5"), not a desktop one (3.5").No free lunch, and no free laptop

You'll also need to check the drive connectors to see if it is SATA or PATA and get the appropriate one if you do decide to go that way - PATA has two obvious rows of pins for data SATA just a narrower slot arrangement (just google for images to see the difference if unsure - it is very obvious but hard to describe).0

If you boot into bios , F2/F3 on startup I think, is your h/d being seen ?? You may have to navigate around a bit to find it.
If the h/d is connected by cable can you check other end, motherboard , if you can get to it.
If its a sata drive can you plug it into another pc ? Same connects, use dvdone's for temp.
Trying to find out if hdd is broke or just your windows install.0 -
If it wasn't being seen then there wouldn't be a read error message.
Using another PC is a good substitute for buying a caddy though. As I've always had caddies around I never thought of that.0 -
