Good friends and/or relatives might appreciate one of your large coffee jars of jam rather than risk freezing it

Did you sterilise the jars? I've used peanut butter jars, which have a plastic lid, for jams and chutneys and they've been fine.

I've also just checked a plastic ice cream tub of marmalade that I made last January. I'd run out of jars and put the last bit in the tub (which wasn't sterilised) and it's still fine. No sign of mould.

So, I'd say you should be ok to use the jars that you've got and save the freezer space for something else.

Edited to add, that's January 2010.
  • Yes of course you can freeze jam. But why would you want to? The fact that you made the fruit into jam means you have preserved it, freezing is superfluous.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I just really didn't want to watse any. I am sure I will be able to share it with family / friends. I did sterilise all the jars so hopefully they will be fine in the cupboard until need.

    Thanks again:T
