Can you freeze jam- not in jars - Help

I've got a bit of a problem here. I made a batch of peach and ginger jam which has started to develop a thin layer of mould on it. I know that the mould isn't dangerous, and can be taken off, but I won't be able to use the three jars in time.
So.. I've had a bit of a brainwave - is it worth taking off the mould, scooping he unaffected jam into small silicone pots and freezing it? I really don't want to bin it, as it did taste great when first made.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for that - just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something obvious re food safety ( having a bit of a dizzy brunette moment right now!)

  • i agree with Alison - but I've never tried freezing jam - i have a husband and son who swear there must be a jam monster in the fridge eating it all!
    :jFlylady and proud of it:j
  • I've frozen home made strawberry and blackberry jams in plastic containers and had no problems. The only thing is that it doesn't freeze completely solid so needs to be standing upright in your freezer or it will leak out.

If ever my jam starts to get mouldy I just scoop out the mould and carry on eating it and have never been ill so far ;)
    Never say never
  • If you are concerned about the mould you could scrape it off and tip remainder into a pan and bring to boil just for a minute or two. Put into containers leaving some space at the top (as it will 'expand' when frozen) and when cold put into the freezer.
There are lots of recipes for 'Freezer Jam' if you google so its quite ok to freeze it. Shame to waste if its good jam !

Thanks for the ideas - in the end, I tipped it intothe silicone containers, and then put them on baking trays in the FF. About an hour ago, I took them out, unpeeled the jam portions from the silicone and put it in double-thickness 'twists' of greaseproof paper. These were then put in a labelled bag, and I stashed them back in the bottom of the FF. Each 'twist' would cover a couple of generous slices of toast, imo.

Really sorry if this is a stupid question but can you freeze jam?

I have just made jam for the first time ever tonight using 4lbs of blackcurrants from my garden. I am delighted as it appears to be setting nicely, however..... I have heaps of the stuff now!

I couldn't bear to waste any by throwing the excess away but I ran out of ordinary sized jam jars and have had to decant the remains into large jars, like large coffee jars etc!

I am really hoping I can palm some off to family and friends but if not can it be frozen?

    Thanks

    Hi goobergirl,

I haven't frozen jam but this thread may help:

I'll add your thread to it later to keep the advice in one place.

Jam will keep for a long time (found some blackcurrant to-day made at least 3 years ago), so provided you have a container with a good seal I think that freezing should not be necessary. Not sure how well it would freeze but then I am funny about freezing things so maybe look at the thread Pink has recommended.
