A friend of mine is moving to a house that has prepayment meters with Hydro Electric for electricity and Scottish Gas for gas.

He is presently with e.on with an online tariff so if he takes his e.on tariff with him will e.on change the meters for free.

And how long will it take to get done?

He does not have an internet connection at present so I deal with his readings etc. online.

  • Hi j2011

There are a number of factors involved in cases like this and each request is judged on its individual merits.

For instance, if your friend has been with us for over 12 months and the credit history is good, we will usually look at replacing Prepayment Meters at a new property without charge as this will be classed as a home move.

It may be necessary to carry out a separate credit check as well. Again, this will depend on the individual circumstances.

As the new property is not supplied by us, your friend would need to apply to switch. At this point, he would need to make the agent handling the switch aware of the old account and that he wants it handling as a home move. His new account will then be noted accordingly.

Once the switch is complete, he can apply to have the meters changed without charge citing the information advised at the point of sale about his old account.

If all is ok with the old account history and the credit check, the meters are generally changed without charge. As I say, though, each case is different and it very much depends on the individual circumstances.

Changing supplier usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks. Replacing the meters after this can take a further 2 to 4 weeks depending on work loads.

Hope this is useful j2011. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

He has been with e.on for 3 years.
  • then assuming no massive issues with DD's being missed or bill being continually and seriously behind the meter exchange will be free of charge, and done once the supply has been gained from Scottish Hydro, takes about 5 weeks, then can arrange echange of ppm to cred mtr 10 days after supply live, so will probably face about 2 weeks or so on eon ppm meter between Eon gaining supply at new property and getting engineers out to exchange the meters. Then as you have already stated will put back on ol tariff already has at previous property
