Selling house - Final Bills?

Options
Hi,

We're just putting our house on the market, and I'm wondering, when should we apply for final bills with the utility providers? We've already moved out, and so only a little gas and electricity is used to keep the boiler running and such. So when is the right time to get the last bills - i'm assuming it would have to be when you have an exchange date?

grateful for any help!

  • Hi, we had to give our readings for the final bill the day we moved out and the new homeowners had the keys.

Completion, not Exchange of Contracts, is the key date. You are responsible for utilities up till then even if you're not living there.

A week or so before Completion, call the utilities and give them your new address to ensure you have an account set up where you're moving to.

Then on the day of Completion, ring them again with final meter readings and ask for final bill to be sent to your new address.

Similarly give meter readings on the same day for your new address, to ensure you don't end up paying for the previous occupant's gas etc!
