Full service history or not?

Hi all,

My friend is in the process of putting his car on Autotrader and doesn't know whether to advertise it having a FSH or not. He's had the car since it was 10 months old and has always taken it to a main dealer for servicing. Trouble is it has a gap in the service history - my friend became ill and had to surrender his driving license to the DVLA for a year. During this time he put the car in the garage and declared it SORN.

For obvious reasons the car was not serviced during the year it was off the road. Is the car considered to have FSH or has this been ruined by the year it was SORN?

  • As long as he states that it was sorn i cant really see the problem with the service history as the rest would still add up.
  • Thanks, that's what I thought too but I'm sure someone will kick up a fuss somewhere along the line when they see there's a stamp missing in the service book.

A stamp won't be missing based on mileage but just on time. I doubt anyone looking at it would pick it up - merely that it had been serviced every 10,000 miles or whatever.

And a full service history means there is a full record of the servicing of the car. It doesn't mean that it had been done when it should have. I've bought classic cars with full service history. Once you got to say 20,000 miles there were no more dealer stamps however there was a binder 6" thick of receipts and bills for every single thing that was done, even down to a fuse or bulb. Thats a full service history way better than meaningless stamps in a book.

Advertise it as FSH - after all, it does have one.

    FSH (1 missing)
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Yes, but it has more emphasis on the FULL part. ;)

Like FULLY WORKING (engine is knackered)? :D
  • Thanks for all your help. I suggested he contact the DVLA to obtain proof of the SORN to put in with the service book. Is this something they're normally happy to provide? (For a fee I'm sure if at all) :)

I'm not sure that will help to be honest. If a car gas been laying idle for a year, there could be other issues that would worry some people; tyres being one.

It was a good few years ago that it was off the road so that isn't a problem, tyres, etc will have long been replaced.

The SORN paperwork will be more to prove there was a good reason for the gap in the service history for a potential buyer to see.
