Thanks alot Barclaycard

I applied for a Barclaycard so I could do a balance transfer. I get the letter saying that it had provisionally been accepted but that I needed to send 3 original documents to confirm my identity for fraud prevention reasons.

I sent them a recent utility bill, my most recent wage slip, and a copy of my tennancy agreement as per their list of acceptable documents.

I have had a letter today saying that my application has been rejected because my documents were not adequate, even though they came off their list of acceptable documents!

I now have a credit rejection on my record, which obviously counts against me for a reason that I cannot actually fathom out. They say they didn't meet their fraud prevention requirements but it is what they asked for!

Has anyone had this happen to them, and if so what did you do about it? Do I have a right to challenge the decision? The only reason I'm miffed about it is that its a black mark on my credit score and if I had known they were going to do this I wouldn't have bothered applying!

  • You don't have a rejection on your record - all you have is a search, which will drop off after a year.
  • These are circumstances in which an appeal might be worthwhile. Can you think of any reason why there might have been a problem establishing your identity on the basis of what you gave them?

I would expect, you should be able to appeal if the grounds for rejection was insufficient documents, when in fact you sent adequate documentation. On the other hand, nothing prevents Barclay's to reject you after the appeal, either.

Well, the first thing is that it's a business proposal. There's no right to credit, something a lot of people forget. Barclays can decline you for any reason (or indeed, no reason at all), if they feel like it.

That said, your rejection sounds like it comes down to some half-witted jobsworth. An appeal might be worthwhile, or perhaps a complaint of inefficiency aimed higher up (which might then have the effect of getting your application reconsidered).

  • To be honest, it's not that I needed the card, but the interest free bit would have been nice. I also definitely do not view credit as a given right. It just annoyed me that I followed their rules to the letter, and still get turned down on what seems to be a technicality! I think I might just pay off the one I have ASAP and then be done with it.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was some jobsworth to be honest!!! Now if only I could find a bank to do me a 100% mortgage hahaha!

Just as well you do not really need the card considering Barclays are not trusting you with one.

Yeah steady on folks. We all know the stuff about there not being a right to credit etc and CCs can make their own decisions.

But here the OP was told he was accepted subject to docs which he provided. They then complained that he failed on the documents. If he provided what was required, and all was in order, then it seems somewhat unfair. Doesn't necessarily lead to a legal remedy or a certain appeal, but I hope the OP gets it sorted.
  • Is the OP sure his documents didn't end up in the hands of one of the customer service team from Mumbai, because they never get anything right.
Or no one even bothered to check your documents in the first place!!
