Gumtree buyer wants to pay via paypal.

I am selling a piece of jewellery and I have listed it in both my local newspaper as well as on Gumtree under my local town.
Since then I have fielded a lot of emails but all are requesting me to post the item and for them to pay via paypal.
I have had the usual Nigeria emails but one is from someone in a city only 1 1/2 hours away from me, they too are asking me to post etc.
I have stated in my listing I will not post and will only accept payment on collection.
I know I could be alienating general buyers but I can't afford to be stung, is there any safe way of selling a piece of jewellery through a website such as gumtree.
I suppose I could contact this person and advise I will post a listing on ebay and would they like to continue the sale through there.
Would that be safeguarding myself enough.
Thankyou to anyone for your advice. I feel I should just ignore these emails but wanted someone else to confirm my suspicions. I really cant see the scam when they are offering Bank Transfer (in particular) as well sa paypal as their payment methods.

I'm not an expert but at lot of the paypal scams is item not received or something like that. I'd stick with cash on collection.
If you're desperate to sell it then maybe take it to a jewlery shop and see what they will offer?[STRIKE]£2200[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1950[/STRIKE][STRIKE]£1850[/STRIKE] £1600 on my credit card

Thankyou Danni, I thought it would be something like that and I am assuming even if I sent the item special delivery insured to the hilt there would probably still be a way of these people trying to rip people off.
I don't understand the bank transfer route at all though.
I think I will try my local jewellers this week, I'm hoping I would get 20% of the current sale price (the ring can be viewed online at that price) I'm not sure I would get anywhere near that by going via the jewellers but to be honest anything I get for it is better then nothing.
It has sat in my jewellery box now for nearly two years.Competition wins - 09/03 - £500 ELC Vouchers 11/04 - Lush Goodies 21/04 - Gillette Fusion Gift Pack 22/05 - Mirrors DVD 29/05 - Return Flights to London & £500 29/05 - £50 Homebase Gift Vouchers 20/09 - Remote Control Helicopter 28/09 - £225 Bingo Win 05/10 £25 Photobox Vouchers 16/09 £90 Cash 30/11 £29 Cash 03/01 £20 03/04 Fifa Football :T0 -

If they send it through PayPal as a 'gift' or send you a bank transfer, then the only way they could be scamming you is if the Paypal / Bank account is hacked.
It sounds like your buyer is legit. As long as you send it Special Delivery you are pretty safe - the buyer will be taking a much bigger risk.0 -
If you request the payment as a gift the buyer will more than likely think you are trying to scam them. The rules for Paypal for off ebay sales are now the same as on ebay so the buyer is probably just trying to cover themselves. Send them a Paypal invoice then send the item via special delivery and it should be fine.ashleypride wrote: »If they send it through PayPal as a 'gift' or send you a bank transfer, then the only way they could be scamming you is if the Paypal / Bank account is hacked.

Thankyou for all your advice, I have been fielding so many emails and when pressed lots want posting to Nigeria but then a break through today and I had a call from a local gentleman so hopefully this sale will come off and I wont have to think about these chancers anymore.
I have added to my listing that if anyone requires this item to be posted that I will create an ebay listing, but so far no one has took me up on that option lol.Competition wins - 09/03 - £500 ELC Vouchers 11/04 - Lush Goodies 21/04 - Gillette Fusion Gift Pack 22/05 - Mirrors DVD 29/05 - Return Flights to London & £500 29/05 - £50 Homebase Gift Vouchers 20/09 - Remote Control Helicopter 28/09 - £225 Bingo Win 05/10 £25 Photobox Vouchers 16/09 £90 Cash 30/11 £29 Cash 03/01 £20 03/04 Fifa Football :T0
