What can I grow in a Strawberry pot?

...apart from strawberries ! I bought one of those teracotta strawberry planters last year 9pot with holes in the sides) planted strawberries in it and it was useless! So not wanting to waste it is there anything else I could plant in it? I dont really use herbs but cant think of anything else!
thanks for any help

  • could you plant some small rockery or alpine type flowers? I imagine they would look pretty trailing down from the holes. But if they got too big it could be a pain...
Actually any annual flower you could probably plant in there, if it got swamped with flowers it would just look pretty!
Bonus with rockery type plants is they tend to not need so much water so might be better in the strawberry pot (I find them hard to water properly...)

I've been tempted to buy one of those pots and plant it up with busy lizzies, I think it would look really pretty, or maybe petunias.
  • I threw a few left over pansies into ours last summer. It looked pretty enough
Smashed through my weightloss target. Looking at 120lbs+ loss. BMI over 40 down to 20.5. Training hard to get body fat under 20%, not far to go now :j

Good ideas-thankyou..like alpine plants so thats a possibility. are there any veggies i could grow in it?
  • possibly a bush / tumbling tomato depending on the size of the pot, it wouldn't use the holes though but you could always plant marigolds in there! (although they might get a bit big). Or basil!

edited to add - or carrots! I always think that carrot foliage is really pretty.

    Hi

is this made of clay? So it dries out really easily?

if so try and create some sort of water reservoir in the bottom - may be just a used tin or plastic bowl from a microwave meal in the base. You can make a useful watering column by cutting a tin open at both ends, plce is in the base of the container, fill with small stones, surround with soil and them raise the timn half its height and add more stones and mnore soil until it is full. That way, the water goes into the middle of the pot and diffuses into the soil, instead of landing on the top and running out of the holes. A peat-free compost would be better that a peat based one as the latter are vert dificult to get moist once they dry out.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
