Have checked out the useful stain sites but can't find a tip for coal marks that my cat has made (climbing up the chimney). I have 4 black coal paw prints on my cream cheap carpet. Have tried 'Vanish' mousse but this didn't work. As the carpet is cheap I don't mind washing the marks but what temperature water should I use?

Hello shanni
I have no experience of cleaning stains from a carpet but I would be tempted to try brushing the area first, to loosen the carbon deposits. A good shake and brush outside will probably remove most (if not all) carbon deposits, whereas washing might only result in a fixed stain.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the 'I wanna' and 'In my home' and Health & Beauty'' boards. If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. Thanks for your reply Nile but I have tried brushing with a small, stiff pan-brush but it didn't work. The marks have been there a couple of weeks and won't vacuum out either.

Whatever you do - do not use very hot water."This site is addictive!"
Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA
Preemie hats - 2.0 -
Try baby wipes, if not a solution of washing soda crystals and warm water I find get the coal marks out of my carpet0

probably no help now - but DO NOT rub/wash etc - vacumn with a nozzle holding it above the carpet so you don't rub it in. Then get down on your knees and pray!!
Sorry not alot of help just my personal experience - vacumn as much up like that and then slowly try to blot it out - the longer you leave it the worse it'll be to get out.
Painful memories! - I'd saved long and hard for a lovely pale beige carpet and then had a soot fall from the chimney  I got the worst of it out and saved up for a rug to cover the rest but it was heart breaking at the time0 -
Hi, My naughty puppies have today grabed the coals off my coal fire and decided to chew them up all over the carpet, of course it is a light coloured one. I have hovered it up but it is still black i'm a bit worried to start scrubing in case i make it worse. Do anyone know how i get rid of this. Sorry if it is in the wrong thread. Many thanks.0

Hi,
You could try some dilute Stardrops solution in some warm water and gently sponge the area. Make sure you dont over wet the area and blot dry with towels being careful not to put any wood furniture over the are until it COMPLETELY dries! I say this with feeling otherwise you can and up with rust marks!
If the marks are resistant or the area looks ruined, have you considered claiming on your house insurance OR could you hire/borrow a carpet cleaner? HTH0 -
I know this is an old thread but I came here in search of help as I've just dropped a large amount of coal on to my pale carpet. Had to miss the rug of course
What has definitely worked is to get the vacuum cleaner out. I used the hose attachment with no nozzle or brush and placed it square on the dust without rubbing. 99% of the dust came out. The remainin stain came out when I went back over the area rubbing gently with the upholstery cleaning nozzle. No water or wetting at all.
As it is that time of year again I hope this helps someone else as clumsy as me!0 -
