Worldwide Winter Sports Travel Insurance - Ski Club vs the rest?

Renewing my annual worldwide travel insurance and have been with a variety of cheap providers over the years.
However going through comparisons I'm starting to actually look at the small print now and reading reviews, and I'm coming to the conclusion that many of the cheaper ones are not all they're cracked up to be.
I look at Ski Club of GB insurance each year but dismiss them because they are twice the price (around £100 for what I want). However they are supposedly reputable.
Has anyone had experience with Ski Club of GB when claiming, and any opinions of their service? Can their prices be justified and are there particular benefits to what they offer over others?
Any good alternatives? I'm especially looking for one that satisfies the following...
Annual multi-trip worldwide inc US/Canada
14 day winter sports at least
£2000+ possessions cover, better still if there's no low individual item limit (ski equipment is expensive!)
£2000+ cancellation cover
Likely to pay out for volcanic ash incidents etc
Low excess, especially on smaller value claims (possessions for example).
Fully approved/regulated or whatever and covered if they go bust (not just get my money back but will still pay out under the insurance terms, or at least get me back home and/or pay the hospital bills).
Each time I see one that look right, I check the reviews and they're mostly awful or there's some annoying restriction (e.g. Virgin had a good deal except in the small print they only do 10 days winter sport). Although I'm getting the impression all insurance companies are awful.
I would be tempted to go back to the one company that I actually made a claim through and had good experience, which was Egg, but that was 10 years ago and they use a completely different underwriter and I bet the claims handling is different now. Also a lot more expensive than they used to be.
Edit: Actually Ski Club's cover seems pretty rubbish. £1000 for cancellation on their basic (£90) package, no cover at all for missed or abandoned departures, £250 max on a single item of ski equipment up to max £300 on ski equipment (otherwise £200 per other valuable items, up to max £1000). Though their excess is fairly low at £75 per section.
