Inland Revenue withholding funds

I mistakenly paid some money to the Inland revenue instead of to my solicitors (2 yrs ago). Since then I have been trying with no success to trace where it went.
Can anybody help?

How did you pay it to HMRC - tax, Tax Credits etc? What have you done to get it back?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • If it was a bank transfer, it might be worth you contacting HMRC with full details of the payment that you made to them (date of transfer, amount, HMRC bank account used etc), asking them to trace the receipt.

I have had some experience of making bank transfers to HMRC, and from time to time, unidentified payments (sometimes of an unimaginable size) used to sit in their bank account unclaimed. Your payment might be sitting in limbo because they do not know what it relates to. If you have not quoted a recognisable HMRC reference number, they probably won't even have allocated it to your account.
  • I had to pay the monies to my solicitors for an outstanding bill and I wrote the wrong address in the payment box or wrote the cash amount in the wrong box.
I have proof on a bank statement showing it's been paid to Inland and revenue.
I have contacted the solicitor who have tried (not very hard) to contact the correct department but failed to get a response. I then wrote off to the same department (in Bootle) explaining my situation but have had no response.

the bank will be able to trace the sort code and account number it went to but they may charge for their time. So whether this is worthwhile depends on the amount.
