"Enough"

Hi all,

..not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I was "scanning" the forums the other day and came across a reply that somebody had written quoting a good book to read called "Enough" (John Naish I think)...any how, popped into the Library last week to get it, and have not put it down 'til finished.

A realy informative read...well worth the effort. It has certainly changed my whole perception of things "consumer". Would recomend to anybody / everybopdy to read this book....(Sorry..my wife is already fed up with me telling her she has to read it every 5 minutes as well).

  • OK Stu - you're going to have to give us more of a review than that if you're trying to convince us to read it.

You say its all about "consumer" so its a book about shopping?? Is it chick-lit or an economic tome - i'm none the wiser from your description...

From a Google search I imagine this is the book:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Enough-Breaking-free-world-more/dp/0340935901

Or for a taster he wrote on the subject in the Times:
    Part 1 here
    Part 2 here

Not sure it has very much to do with Savings and Investments though. More about the desire to spend.

Hi there Vulcan....sorry I should have put in a bit more detail...but my thoughts are....

...there have been many books that write about “consumerism” and why “us humans” feel the need to spend, (and save). This book considers this “need” in evolutionary terms.

The theory is that this need is driven as a result of our ancient survival mechanisms, from times when there was never “enough”. (ie of anything).

However, over the last few decades we find ourselves absolutely buried in a plethora of “stuff”, but still feel the need to acquire more. This book explores the rational behind this, and proposes some interesting thoughts.

Although I am not into all the “green issues, and “deep thinking” normally associated with this kind of tome, it is written with some humour and in a very easy to read style which although makes for an entertaining read also makes you question some of your own wants and desires, (…and the need to save for them)

(…sorry if that’ all sounds a little “philosophical”…… but I think I might just turn hippy after all….)
