kitten with sore eye

We've got a 13 week old kitten and have noticed over the weekend that she keeps half closing one of her eyes. Had a good look last night and there was a bit of crusty stuff on her eyelid so wiped it with cotton wool and water. This morning her eyelid looks quite red. I'm going to ring the vets later just wondered if there's anything I can do in the meantime, and also how much treatment is likely to cost? Thanks

That sounds like conjunctivitis. If correct the cost will be low, just the price of a little tube of cream which you'd apply twice daily, less than a tenner I'd say, and whatever your vet charges for a consultation. My cat had this as a kitten and the cream was very easy to apply - he'd hold his head up waiting for it as the cream was cool and soothing for him.

Wiping with cotton wool soaked in water that has been boiled and let go cold is the best thing in the meantime.

I'm not a vet by the way, this is only my opinion. Fingers Xed it's nothing more complicated.

thanks, the vet thought our older cat had maybe caught him (kitten isn't a girl as we thought...lol) with his claw as they playfight a lot. So got some cream to put in his eye twice a day. £24.xx not too bad :) x
  • I used Optrex anti biotic eye drops and they worked a treat. The vet nurse told me about them. I think they're about £5 ish from Boots etc.
