Electrical work - remedial work and kitchen rewiring

We've just had an electrical inspection (NICEIC) prior to some rewiring for a new kitchen.

The flat (in South London) is just over 30yrs old and there was a fair bit of remedial work needed (some thanks to the previous owner's DIY wiring...). The quote:

New enclosed bathroom light = £50
Bonding to BS: 7671 = £120
2 replacement pendents = £40
Gas pipe work needs to be earthed 10mm = £175
Pipe work on boiler needs to earth bonded = £38
Making safe cable under sink = £60
Upgrade water earth bonding = £100
New consumer unit = £450
Make safe socket run off lighting circuit ( ) = £85
New kitchen light = £75

At the moment we have an old wooden-backed fuse box, so I don't doubt this needs replacing.

Total for remedial work = £1193

We also asked for a quote for new sockets etc. for our new kitchen:

4 x double sockets
Power for boiler, fridge, gas hob ignition, oven and hood.

Quote includes installing a new ring circuit for the kitchen from CU. Sockets/cables above worktop to be chased into wall and made good. Below worktop will be run in plastic trunking. The oven power is an extention from an old position, with installation of new point. All work to BS 7671 and NICEIC installation certificate. Total cost for kitchen = £975

Total cost: £2168

Are these quotes reasonable?

Dave

  • I have just carried out a FULL rewire in a 3 bedroom upper flat for less than £2000, including certification bonding etc. (and kitchen electrics)

The price depends on where you live.

ps I am also NICEIC & SELECT registered.
    baldly going on...
  • Sounds very expensive. I would definitely get another quote.

Especially, the earth bonding and consumer unit.
    New consumer unit = £450 !!
Parts will be £100 or less, labour 1 hour if just connecting to existing wiring.

  • yes agreed does sound expensive to me, fusebaord going rate is about £300, and yes it does take only 1-2 hours to change ithowever, a full test is then required to comply with regulations as each prtective device has or will be changed so the electrician will need to make sure that the reading are aceptable for each circuit which takes about half an hour per circuit if done corectly.so in reality it takes about 4 hours to cahnge and test.
chnaging two penadnts is also expensive at 40 quid when you bear in mind the electrician is already on site, this will take about 20mins and about £6 for two new penadnts.
