Hi, excuse me if i've missed something but PC is playing up and cant read the complete thread........however, thought I would just mention that I've just dealt with a similar issue in work and it turned out to be issues relating to tax relief on pension contributions (relevant if you are a higher rate tax payer and have a personal pension).Friend Debt: 5,000/3,850
2013 Start Mortgage: 306,585/306,585
Overpayments: 0
ISA Saver: £100 -
Just rechecking tax codes and have found out that I was on a 522L code for 07/08 then 603L for 08/09. Is it correct that a 603L code is like and emergency code when you start a new employer? Also if you didn't have a P45 to hand at the time of switching employers BUT filled out a P46, is a P46 sufficient enough with information for the HRMC to adjust your tax code within the tax year to which this applies? I asked my previous employer at the time to pass on a P45 but I'm thinking that now they never got it. I've been looking through my records and don't seem to have a coding notice either.
Do I have a case for ESC A19 based on information above?0 -
Me too. I know the government's short of money but what has happened recently to cause this. Just got two P800T's for 2008-2009 £1584.07 and 2009-2010 £1174.64. They say they are going to adjust my 2011 Tax code to recover the money. What will that cost me each month? I am on PAYE and work for a local authority with no other income. How the hell can this happen?0

You need to check the two P800 letters closely.
What is the Total underpayment that HMRC say you owe ?
Note, if the total amount owed is under £2000 then HMRC would normally opt to adjust your tax code to recover it.
Check all the numbers on the P800 against your P2 Coding Notices and your P60s for the relevant tax years, HMRC do not always get it right !
To calculate how much it will cost you each month, divide the total you owe by 12
However, if you would face difficulty paying that amount each month, then phone HMRC (see phone number on the P800) and ask them if you can set up a payment plan to repay over 2 or 3 years. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. If they arrived in the same envelope then the figure you owe will likely be the figure on the final (ie 09/10) year. You can confirm that, if the £1174.64 has a '15' printed to the right hand side? The P800 Notes you also received explains it?
If that is the net underpayment - then coding it out over a year will cost you a shade under an extra £100 monthly. You can also request - if that will be a problem - to have them collect the underpayment over 2 or even 3 years. See the 'What Happens Next' leaflet you also received with the P800s.I am on PAYE and work for a local authority with no other income. How the hell can this happen
You are closer to the answer than we are? If the £1174.64 is the total underpayment - then you clearly overpaid on one of the years. If you want to post the detailed P800 figures and also your P60 figures for the same 2 years (pay / tax / Code number) - someone will attempt to shed some light on it.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Do I have a case for ESC A19 based on information above?522l and 603L were the standard codes for the 07/08 and 08/09 tax years.
When you complete a P46 you make a self decleration as to your employment status, i.e. A- this is your only job and the first of the tax year, B- this is your only job but not your first of the tax year, or C- you have another job or are in receipt of a pension.
When you complete one of these statements the employer will operate the code as directed by the form. i.e for 07/08 A- operate 522L code on a cumulative basis, B- operate 522L code on a week1 basis, C- operate BR tax code.
When/If HMRC receive the form if the code matches the statement that has been selecetd then they will take no further action but to update your records with the new employers details.
The information you have given as to why you have underpaid is quite vague and you really need to provide more information.
Have you been told why the underpayment has arisen? what are the figures? do you agree with the reason given etc etc.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.
