Can't install wireless mouse

I have bought a wireless mouse from Argos, their own brand, and am having problems installing it on the Vista desktop. I keep getting the following message when I try to install the drivers:-
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
USB Browser Mouse
An error occurred during the installation of the device:
The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."
A suggestion on the MS forums was to copy the usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf files from a working Vista pc.
I was able to install it on the Vista laptop so I tried to copy the files from there, but there was no usbstor.inf, only usbstor and usbstor.pnf. Copied them to the desktop, rebooted and no joy.
I had a similar problem trying to change my wired mouse a couple of months ago and gave up. However I'm now concerned that I won't be able to install any hardware to the desktop and I was intending installing a new printer.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks, but my pc wasn't upgraded from XP. It came with Vista.
I did download and run a MS Fixit, but that didn't fix it either.0
