New camera help.

Hi all,
I`m looking to buy a new camera, I just want topoint and shoot and take good pictures, I am looking at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5 and the Panasonic TZ10, both of which are good quality brands, the problem I have is which one?, any input would be great......(or can you recommend any other camera`s).

Thanks

Sony use proprietry memory sticks, Panasonic use standard SD cards.

  • Currys are selling the Sony for £249.99, and the Panasonic for £229.99, I reckon for about £250.00 I should get a decent buy, obviously I will get them cheaper from Amazon etc, but the above are just examples so I would say my budget will be £250.00. :p

tz10 avilble from Vennal Cameras for under £150 inc delivery, we just got a FZ45 from them, cracking camera and under £200.

It's a real shop but doesn't seem to have a web site but looking their ebay shop your budget will go quite a long way
  • Panasonic has a slightly faster lens on paper f/3.3-4.9 compared with f/3.5-5.5 for the Sony.

Panasonic also has a slightly longer telephoto (300mm equivalent vs 250mm).

Panasonic has more megapixels, but that doesn't count for much.

Have a look at some sample pictures from them both and see which you prefer.

Forget the megapixel cound, as long as they are over 8mp then you will be good

The most important thing on this kind of camera is the quality of the lens, that is what will make or break your pictures

I believe that panasonic use Lecia as their lens manufacturer, and although I am no camera expert, I know they are on of the best. So that would be a positive

For the price you are looking at, you will certainly get a very nice camera. But for that price, personally, I would go to a propper shop (like Jesops) and have a go. Take some pics, see what the body feels like in your hand, intuitive controls etc and pay the extra few quid and buy it from there. Anything goes wrong it is so much easier and better to be able to walk into a store and sort it

  • I got the misses a Nikon coolpix and she loves it.
  • Thanks for the replies, I am leaning towards the Panasonic, as I think that the reviews are very positive.
