National Insurance question

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, not quite sure where it should go.
To keep it short, I have 3 part time cleaning jobs, I have recently taken on a 4th (all different private houses) which takes me over the threshold for NI. I also receive Child and Working tax credit.
I am not sure if I should now be paying NI, I have looked at the direct gov website but it isn't really clear. I thought I might email the contacts at direct gov, is that the best thing to do, if not who do I get in touch with to find out.

    Are you self employed?

Well technically yes, but as until now i have also earned below the tax threshold I haven't paid any tax. I did complete a tax return last year (done with the help of an accountant) and my income was put under self employed as I inherited some money from a trust fund.

If you are self-employed and this is known to HMRC (which clearly it is), they should be asking you to pay NI classes 2 and 4 if it is due. For instance class 4 would have been part of the tax return process.

Thanks for the replies. I have not been asked to pay anything, does that mean I do not need to pay anything, or is it up to me to contact them and arrange payment.

It is always up to the individual to keep on top of their tax liabilities, even PAYE employees.

You say you are now over the threshold so start paying NI which is about £10 a month and you may have to pay more class4 at the end of the tax year. Just call HMRC.

At what point in time did you realise you are earning over the threshold?

Thank you thats very helpful. I started the 4th job at the beginning of this year, so my income has only just gone over the threshold. I will call HMRC tomorrow to clarify how much I should pay.
