Car Insurance and Selling My Car

I would like some advice about car insurance and selling my car.

I have ordered a new car which I will be collecting in approx. 10 days time. I am planning to sell my current car privately but am very confused about insurance. I had arranged to change my current policy ffrom my current car to the new one as this seemed the best option. I thought that when people wanted to test drive the car that I am selling that they would be covered on their own insurance but have been looking online and it appears that this is not the case.

I would be grateful if anyone could clarify. Do I have to keep my insurance policy going on the car that I am planning to sell in addition to getting insurance for my new car? Also, what happens about ensuring that people are insured to test drive the car that I am selling?

Thanks to all of you. I am so confused!!

If people use driving other cars cover on their existing policy (if they have it) to test drive your car, there will only be third party cover in place. No damage to your vehicle will be covered.

Options are for someone seriously interested in buying your car, to cover it fully comprehensive on their own policy so they can drive it - chances are they won't do this because of the cost involved.

Suggest you leave your current insurance in place and take people out in your car (you driving) or sell it to a dealer and let them worry about the insurance for people to drive.

As the OP has rightly noticed, this can be a bit of a minefield. I have seen fully comp policies that stated you can drive someone else's car (with 3rd party cover only), provided that the car already insured on its own policy. Reading most fully comp policies though, they simply state that you can drive another car (with 3rd party cover only) with the owner's consent.

Unfortunately, you are relying on the person coming to test drive your car actually being properly insured. To be honest I think a lot of people simply believe they can drive other cars, without actually reading their own policy. What are you going to do though? Insist on seeing each prospective buyer's insurance documents?

It's mainly for this reason that I let a dealer take the hassle out of it.
