Tranferring data to new hard drive.

Guys.

A friend built my new pc a few months back, but being a bit skint at the time, i reused my old hard drive. The drive was wiped, and windows 7 installed. This drive is around 42 months, so i guess its newaring the end of its life. I have the cash to pick up a new drive, so im wondering what is the best way to set a new drive up? Is there a way to quickly/easily transfer the things i need on the old drive, to the new? or do i have to do full installs of each program?

Btw the reason im considering this is that the pc seems to be running slow at the moment, particularly after start up. I have done a malwarebites scan and it comes up with zero. I can post logs if that helps.

Sorry to cut a short story long:)

If your having problems then it would be better to start a fresh!, as its a good time to do it (as no one likes re-installing everything)
However i would make sure you have a list of all your drivers and download a copy,
Then start over.. if you want to just clone the drive from old to new, then your need to get some drive cloning software like clonezilla

and yes while you can get a ton of utilities to clean up your drive and uninfected it.. nothing is cleaner than a fresh setup (but even i avoid starting over) but in this case I probably would start over.. :)

    --Hope that helps

hard disk manufacturers supply free cloning software on their website, or you could use macrium reflect free, or W7 system image, but it's unlikely to cure the speed issue, suggest you post a hijackthis log. how much ram is installed?

Hard drives don't usually run slow because they are old. They usually just fail - working one minute, dead the next time you start up - although they might make a few clicky warning noises before it finally happens.

Your problem almost certainly lies in malware - see the recommendations above.

Alternatively, maybe the drive is nearly full - use CCleaner to get rid of dross that is clogging it up - and defrag it as well. If you haven't done that in over three years, it could help speed things up.

Finally, is it running slow on everything.

If it's just the internet, it might be your broadband connection. Or, are you trying to play 2011-games on a budget machine from 2006?

Why at 3.5 years old do you think it is reaching the end of it's life? Most hard drives will last longer than that (though that doesn't mean that you shouldn't allow for the possibility of failure and always back up).

Its a fairly up to date pc (i5-750 cpu, p7p55d asus MB, nvidia gtx260 oc gfx card, 2x 2gb ddr3 12800c3 1600mhz memory.

I am fairly sure there is plenty of space on the drive, but i will check it, and post logs a little later from home.

In terms of infection or malware, i use norton 360, alongside malwarebites scans on a fairly regular basis ( every week to 10 days) and the slowing down issue is one that has been happening for a while.

Btw the system is used for browsing, and some gaming, largely world of warcraft, which is not massively demanding on memory, but more demanding on cpu.

More likely that Norton 360 is slowing it down?

Honestly i dont know, i just use it as it has been reliable for me for the 3 years i have used it, and has never seemed to be invasive, or take up a lot of resources. I remember using AVG a few years back, and it was a PITA. If people think norton 360 could be the issue, i have no issue with changing, as its due for renewal in about 2 months anyway. I stuck with it for this long as its been reliable, and easy to use.
